The Flood

Well, I came home last night to a little bit of flooding. Some pipe connected to the heat pump burst, spraying water for who knows how long. The closet under the stairs that holds the heat pump, as well as a lot of our storage, was completely flooded. Also, the hallway carpet was disgustingly saturated. We spent last night (once the water was shut off) dragging stuff out of there & figuring out if it was salvageable or not. Lots of stuff ended up in the trash bin. The cats loved it though - thought it was Christmas with all the fun stuff to climb on in the kitchen.

UPDATES:
Peanut has been adopted...by us. The little rugrat is home for good.

Cotton, who was recently adopted, is doing wonderfully in his new home & has been renamed Tyco. Apparently, his favorite game is to drag every toy in the house onto his bed. He got so into this game that he also brought over his food bowl. But the game had to end when he dumped out his water bowl to bring it to the bed as well. Such a goof!

"Eight Below"

With the movie "Eight Below" featuring some very cute Siberian Huskies & Malamutes, shelters around the country are once again concerned that people will rush out to buy their own without realizing the commitment and work involved in actually owning one. It has happened before: “Snow Dogs” and “101 Dalmations” were two of the more recent dog-centric movies that resulted in lots of the featured dogs being purchased, only to wind up in shelters 9 months later when they weren’t so cute & cuddly anymore.

Many shelters, including ours, are therefore attempting to get the word out early: think twice before you buy! We are tabling at the theaters and pet stores with breed information, as well as showcasing any Husky or Husky-mixes that are at your local shelter in need of a home.

The above graphic is an ad some concerned Husky rescue groups put out in Dog Fancy a few years ago. It does a wonderful job of showcasing some of the more, hmmm, undesirable traits of a Husky. I absolutely adore my Tasha, but she is what we call “a lot of dog”. Please, help spread the word that a lot of thought needs to be done before purchasing/adopting any dog, but especially for this particular breed. If you’ve done your research and feel ready for one, please consider adopting one from a shelter or rescue & saving a life.

PS: Cotton, the 3-legged dog has been adopted. Yay!

Mama's Little Helper

Now that Peanut has all this energy, he's decided to become Mama's Little Helper. He wants to do the dishes and laundry. Although, he mostly just ends up in the way. Such a cutie! I didn't get a picture of it, but both Peanut & Boulder have been getting INSIDE the dryer when we're taking out clothes (we triple-check that they aren't still inside when we start it).

SNOW

We got 15.5" of snow this weekend. The dogs loved being out in it, so we took a lot of walks. They do this bunny hop thing when the snow is higher than their bellies.

Even Sati the cat ventured out, on leash, but changed her mind when the she stepped on a big patch of snow and it gave way.

Cute picture

I wanted to have a cute picture be the last posted (rather than the sad amputee one). This is especially for my friend Sarah, who I think would agree Cotton looks quite dashing in his little coat.

Surgery went well

Cotton had his amputation surgery (as you can probably see from the above picture). Having 3 legs hasn't slowed him down at all...well, except that he has some trouble getting up if he rolls onto his back. He looks like a silly turtle turned on its shell. Poor guy. He'll be going to a real foster home soon, but we're suckers and took him back until then. I feel for his next foster parents - he has us well trained: cry and cry in puppy crate until we give up and let him on the bed; then, he curls up and goes to sleep.
